The leading source of mortality last year was the nine elk killed by hunters, followed by drowning (five), vehicle collisions (four), unknown causes (three), bears (two), wolves (two) and one loss each to natural entrapment, poor condition due to parasites, infection and birthing complications. In 2018, the Clam Lake elk herd sustained 29 known deaths. The transfer was the last of a five-year agreement between the states. The most recent shipment took place April 3, when 48 Kentucky elk were moved to a quarantine and acclimatization pen in the Flambeau River State Forest near Winter. The state has two primary elk herds, one in northern Wisconsin near Clam Lake and one in central Wisconsin near Black River Falls.īoth herds were augmented in recent years with elk transferred from Kentucky. The population estimate for the Clam Lake elk herd is 211 to 236 animals, not including elk from Kentucky currently in quarantine, according to the DNR. And the hunt is restricted to animals in the Clam Lake area, where the northern Wisconsin herd was reestablished in 1995. The rule is designed to protect elk recently relocated to Wisconsin from Kentucky. Rules established in the early 2000s stipulate a 50/50 split in elk harvest authorizations between the state and tribes. Each costs $10 to enter.įive elk tags will also be distributed to members of the six Chippewa bands in Wisconsin. Only Wisconsin residents are eligible to receive a permit in both systems. The application period runs through May 31. In addition, one will be awarded through a separate lottery administered by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Just as it did last year, the agency plans to issue four elk tags through a random drawing. The rules and structure of the hunt are very similar to the inaugural season in 2018. Applications will be accepted beginning Wednesday for the 2019 Wisconsin elk hunting season, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
